Eulogy – Vartkes Garabed Keshishian
Born 6 January 1941 and passed 9 April 2020.
Arch Deacon / Avak Sargavak Vartkes Garabed Keshishian was born in Cyprus where he graduated from the Melkonian Educational Institute. His love for the Armenian Church began as a young boy serving as a candle bearer / momagal at St Kevork Church in his birthplace of Limassol.
Vartkes emigrated to London in 1960. He joined the choir at All Saints Church, formerly in St John’s Wood, in 1969. He continued his weekly commitment when the congregation moved to St Peter’s Church in 1975 which was later consecrated as St Yeghiche Church in 2001.
In 1975 he established a shoe business with his beloved brother Djivan in Harpenden, Hertfordshire. They enjoyed working together for 42 years until retiring in July 2017.
Vartkes’ dedication to the Church grew deeper when the late Archbishop Yeghishe Gizirian asked him to serve on the Altar in 1998. Four years later, Vartkes was ordained as Deacon / Sargavak by Bishop Nathan Hovhanissyan.
Vartkes’ dedication was recognised by His Holiness Karekin II when he was honoured with the Pontifical Blessing and Appreciation in 2004 having served on the altar every Sunday. Vartkes was ordained as Arch Deacon / Avak Sargavak in 2010 by Bishop Nathan Hovhanissyan.
In 2015 he was awarded the Letter of Blessings and Appreciation by Bishop Hovakim Manukyan, Primate of the Diocese of the UK and Ireland. He continued to serve as Avak Sargavak until 2016.
