Repose of the Souls

Most assuredly, I say to you, unless a grain of wheat falls into the ground and dies, it remains alone; but if it dies, it produces much grain. He who loves his life will lose it, and he who hates his life in this world will keep it for eternal life. If anyone serves Me, let him follow Me; and where I am, there My servant will be also. If anyone serves Me, him My Father will honour.” — John 12:24-26

Since Jesus has conquered death, we know that our relationship with the reposed does not end, but continues through the communion of saints. Traditionally, prayers will be said in church after the divine liturgy on the seventh day, fortieth day, and anniversary days of their repose. We pray that God may have forgiven them their sins and grant them life eternal, which He promises to those who love Him with all their heart. This also serves to remind us that our lives too are transient, and that we should always have our minds set on heaven.
